The Government of Tamil Nadu has constituted a committee of three members to study the old pension plan, the Tax Pension Plan and the Unified Pension Plan and present a detailed report with recommendations within nine months.
IAS Gagandeep Singh Bedi officer, former director of the Madras Economy School, KR Shanmugam, are members of the Committee. The IAS officer, Pratik Tayal, would be the member secretary of the panel, according to an official statement.
The CPS was introduced to the employees of the state government, who joined the service on April 1, 2003. The National Pension System was introduced for the employees of the Government of the Union as of January 1, 2004. However, The CPS was followed for state government employees.
There have been representations of the employees of the state government to resume the old pension plan that was followed before April 1, 2003. Whileso, the Government of the Union presented the Unified Pension Plan on January 24 of this year.
Reacting to development, Frederic Engels, state coordinator of the CPS Abolition Movement, said it was a “betrayal” by the DMK government and that it was only a time purchase tactic, since it was only one year before the elections of the Assembly in Tamil Nadu.
“The committee will surely not submit a report within nine months. As assured in the electoral manifesto, the DMK government should withdraw the CPS and bring back the old pension plan, ”said Engels.
