Odisha man kills two minor sons when they oppose his remarry decision 

A man in Odisha allegedly killed his two minor sons after they opposed his decision to remarry while the children’s grandmother, who is also the mother of the accused, actively participated in strangulating children.

The gruesome murder had taken place in Dhanchengda village in Odisha’s Nayagarh district. Bodies of two minor sons were found hanging at Prakash Mohanty’s home on March 10 mornings.  

On being informed about deaths of two children –Akash (14) and Bikash (9), Uncle Laxman Nayak grew suspicious and filed a case alleging that family members had killed the two children.

According to police, Mr. Nayak’s sister Kuma Nayak had married to the accused Prakash Mohanty, 16 years ago and she passed away two and half years back.

After the death of his wife Kuma, Prakash and his two sons were living with Prakash’s parents – Achyuta Mohanty (87) and Souri Mohanty (68) – first at Bhubaneswar and Subsequently at village Dhanchangada since one and half years.

“Accused Prakash was intending to marry another lady and has been searching for a bride to which the elder son Akash was learnt to be strongly opposing. It is ascertained during investigation that on March 9, 2025, at about noon time, some people from Bhubaneswar had came to the house of Prakash Mohanty at Dhanachangada and discussed about a proposed marriage with him and they returned afterwards,” Nayagarh police said.

According to police, Prakash Mohanty had conspired with his mother Souri Mohanty few days back to kill both Akash and Bikash to eliminate the obstacle caused by the children to his second marriage.

“In the night when they were asleep in night of March 9, Prakash with assistance of his mother Souri first strangulated his elder son Akash, and used a saree as ligature and hung him from a beam of the roof of the house above the staircase to give it a colour of suicidal hanging. Similarly they both later strangulated the younger son Bikash, and hung him from the same ligature,” Nayagarh police said.

“Then the accused Prakash Mohanty left the house in the dead hour of night. As per their plan, Souri Mohanty, at about 5 a.m. on March 10 started shouting and calling the neighbours and gave it a colour of suicidal hanging by both the children,” police informed. Prakash Mohanty and Souri Mohanty confessed that they had committed murder of both the children.
