Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir said on Monday (March 19, 2025) that he would abide by party discipline and follow instructions of the party leadership, after being summoned by the party disciplinary committee for provocative remarks.

“The comments I made on March 12 were in response to what the Leader of Opposition had said on March 11. The matter has been closed now. My party’s disciplinary committee summoned me today and I attended it. We had a lovely discussion, they gave me some advice and I made a few appeals to them as well,” Mr. Kabir said on Monday outside the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.

He added that he has promised to the committee that he will be “vigilant and aware” towards practising discipline in the party.

On March 11, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly and a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), said that if the BJP comes to power in West Bengal, Trinamool’s Muslim legislators will be “thrown out” of the Assembly.

Responding to this comment, the Trinamool Congress MLA from Bharatpur on March 12 threatened Mr Adhikari with dire consequences and said he will not tolerate personal attacks on Muslims. He had dared the BJP leader to rescind his comments.

Following the controversy, the Trinamool Congress disciplinary committee had served Mr. Kabir with a show-cause notice. But the MLA had responded that he would not back down from his stance and that his community is his priority.

Mr. Kabir had also alleged that other party leaders like Firhad Hakim or Siddiqullah Chowdhury would not be served notices for making controversial comments.

“We advised him that the public forum is not the space to air his dissatisfactions. He cannot make such comments publicly. We reminded him that he had taken an oath under the Constitution. He has agreed to abide by party discipline and has said he will consult us if he has any other complaints or discontent,” State parliamentary affairs minister and senior Trinamool leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay told presspersons after the disciplinary committee met with Mr. Kabir on Monday.

The disciplinary committee of the Trinamool Legislature Party comprises MLAs Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, Aroop Biswas, Chandrima Bhattacharya and Firhad Hakim.
