When it comes to drinking water, people often have clear choices: some prefer a steaming cup while others can’t do without their ice water. Regardless of the temperature, water is extremely essential for our health. In addition to hydration, it helps maintain radiant skin, promotes proper digestion and even controls headaches. But have you ever wondered why many wellness practices urge people to drink warm water instead of its cold counterpart? While it may be refreshing, cold water may not be the best for digestion. Why cold water is not good for the digestive system
Cold water, or indeed any cold food such as ice cream and soft drinks, is not good for the digestive system as it decreases agni, which in Ayurveda is called digestive fire.
Why is Agni important?
According to Ayurvedic health advisor Dimple Jangda, Agni is important for maintaining and sustaining life, and also for supporting vital functions such as digestion, metabolism and immunity. Your body has a warm (37°C) internal environment that supports life.
What happens to your body when you drink cold water?
1. When you drink cold water or eat cold foods, it decreases Agni and also weakens your digestive system, making it slower and sluggish, leading to weight gain, indigestion and bloating.
2. Cold water interferes with stomach acids and bile by diluting them, which can cause indigestion. Additionally, your body has to spend more energy warming the cold liquids in your stomach, which can lead to lethargy, fatigue, and malaise.

What to do instead?
According to Jangda, instead of opting for cold water, include warm water in your daily diet to keep your digestive system happy.
1. Drink warm water during food if you must drink water.
2. Drink warm water throughout the day, 30 minutes before and after food.
3. You can also drink lots of hot herbal teas with a splash of lemon juice to improve your digestion, metabolism and immunity.
How does warm water benefit your body?
Drinking warm water, even when you crave the cold, can provide multiple benefits to your body.
1. Prevents constipation
According to consultant nutritionist Rupali Datta, warm water is excellent for internal “cleansing” as it regulates bowel movement and prevents constipation.
2. Excellent for radiant skin
When you drink warm water, it increases your body temperature and helps release toxins. This detox is excellent for glowing skin.

3. Stimulates hunger
According to Anju Sood, a Bengaluru-based nutritionist, when you drink warm water, your body has to work harder to lower the temperature. This helps start the metabolic system and stimulates hunger.
4. Eliminates congestion
Warm water and steam help clear congestion and relieve a sore throat. Drinking it regularly will also help prevent phlegm buildup.
So, choose warm water in your daily routine to keep your digestive system smooth and happy!
