Bangladesh police arrested actress Meher Afroz Shaon accused of betrayal after he criticized the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. His family’s house in Jamalpur was burned a few hours before. Shaon and his family have ties with the Awami League.
The additional police commissioner of the detective branch, Rezaul Karim Malik, told the Tribune Dhaka that “was arrested in Dhanmondi on Thursday night.” Police said Shaon has been accused of betrayal and is being interrogated. According to reports, he criticized the interim government of Bangladesh.
Shaon’s arrest occurred hours after the attack on his family’s house and the subsequent cause. According to the reports of the local media, the students and the local residents set the house near the Norundi train station in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila around 6 pm. The house belonged to his father, Mohammad Ali, an engineer.
Who is Meher Afroz Shaon?
Meher Afroz Shaon is a political figure of Bangladesh. His father sought the nomination of the Awami League for the last national elections. His mother, Begm Tahura Ali, served twice in Parliament as a deputy for a reserved women’s seat. Shaon also played a parliamentary seat reserved as a candidate for the Awami League in recent elections.
It is believed that Shaon is close to former Bangladesh prime minister, Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina fled to India after the coup in 2024, where she lives in exile.
Shaon began his career as a children’s artist 37 years ago, making his first appearance in the 1988 television series’Swadhinota‘. In addition to his career as an actor, he is a renowned singer and dancer. Shaon is married to the writer and director Humayun Ahmed. In 2016, he received the National Prize for the best female playback singer for the movie ‘Krishnopokhho’.
