Days ago, the United States returned 104 Indian migrants after deporting them as part of the repression of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, about illegal immigration, an issue that he was discussed by him with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a telephone conversation, AP reported.
The trip made by illegal migrants to reach the United States implies going through dangerous crosses, traveling through several countries and going through a dangerous jungle called ‘Darien Gap’ that is between Colombia and Panama.
What is Darien Gap?
The Darien gap is a dense tropical jungle that extends for 97 km and is full of swamps and mountains. This forest is the only alternative to the Pan -American Highway that extends from Alaska to Argentina.
People have long avoided the forest due to their hard weather, lack of infrastructure and extreme land. However, the forest became the inevitable route for desperate migrants trying to enter the United States illegally through the ‘Burro Route’.
While they cross Darien’s gap, migrants have to face rivers that move quickly, dangerous wildlife, muddy swamps and steep mountains.
There are mortal insects, jaguars and poisonous snakes present in the jungle that are potentially mortal for migrants.
The greatest threats faced by migrants are from criminal organizations that control the route.
Drug posters, armed groups and smuggling networks request payments, beat migrants and sometimes even steal them.
Migrants are offered packages of ‘Burro Route’ that take them through the jungle
Speaking to CNN News18, the Vlogger Aditya Tiwari who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, said that migrants are offered several packages of ‘Burro’ Route that range from 15-20 Lakhs to 70-80 Lakhs.
In 15 to 20 Lakhs, migrants are taken through the jungles in Panama and 70 to 80 Lakhs, people are taken through flights from Azerbaijan or Argentina.
Aditya has been making videos to spread awareness about the disadvantages of the ‘Burro Route’ and attracting people who do not enter the United States illegally.
He said that most of them are arrested at the borders and then look for political asylum. He added that the motels, the service stations and the Gurudwaras are being raided these days to find illegal migrants.
Aditya also emphasized that such illegal migrants can never find a white collar job and have to do work work.
How many migrants are crossing and dying in Darien Gap?
There has been a strong increase in the number of people who crossed Darien’s gap. More than 5.2 Lakh Migrants traveled through the jungle in 2023. In 2024, more than 3 Lakh crossed Darien’s gap.
The trip can extend from 7 to 15 days and migrants have to face the shortage of food and water, unbridled crimes and diseases. The route is so dangerous that some do not even survive.
From 2015-2022, 312 deaths or migrant disappearances were reported in Darien Gap and 229 deaths between 2021 and 2023 were reported.
