Fabian Schmidt, a German national who holds a US green card, was detained by US immigration officers on March 7, following his return from a trip to Luxembourg, as per a report by Newsweek.
His family has alleged that the 34-year-old was “stripped naked” and “violently interrogated” before being sent to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Central Falls.
The family of Schmidt also claim that they are not aware of the reasons for the German national’s detention as there were neither some ongoing court cases nor the validity of his green card expired.
Notably, Schmidt’s partner went to the airport to pick him up but waited four hours before informing authorities when he did not arrive. His family is seeking answers for his detention and is trying to get him released.
“It was just said that his green card was flagged,” said Astrid Senior, his mother.
Schmidt’s mother, Astrid Senior, expressed deep concern about the incident. The Boston Globe quoted her saying, “I’m feeling shaken up. It’s unbelievable what’s happening now.”
Speaking to WGBH, Senior stated, “It was just said that his green card was flagged.” She further alleged that her son was “violently interrogated,” stripped naked by immigration officials and placed in a cold shower.
Senior explained that her son, Fabian Schmidt, had his green card legally reissued in 2023 after losing the previous one. However, despite this, it was flagged when he attempted to re-enter the United States.
Meanwhile, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Assistant Commissioner of Public Affairs Hilton Beckham mentioned that such actions are taken when a person with drug charges tries to re-enter the country, citing drug charges as a probable cause behind the incident.
“These claims are blatantly false with respect to CBP. When an individual is found with drug-related charges and tries to reenter the country, officers will take proper action,” he told the Newsweek.
