Badar Khan Suri Deportation: Badar Khan Suri was by immigration authorities in the US over alleged ties to Hamas.
A US court blocked the Donald Trump administration from deporting Georgetown University researcher Badar Khan Suri who was detained by immigration authorities. The Indian national and a postdoctoral fellow is studying and teaching in the US on a student visa.
Following his detention, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) accused him of “spreading Hamas propaganda” and having “close connections to a known or suspected terrorist”.
Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary at DHS, said on X (formerly Twitter) that Badar Khan Suri was “actively spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting antisemitism on social media”.
She accused him of having “close connections to a known or suspected terrorist, who is a senior adviser to Hamas”.
Badar Khan Suri’s lawyer denied the allegations and said in a court filing that the Indian academic was being targeted because of his wife’s “identity as a Palestinian and her constitutionally protected speech”.
What US Court Said On Badar Khan Suri’s Deportation
In an order, a US court said that Badar Khan Suri “shall not be removed from the United States unless and until the Court issues a contrary order”.
His wife Mapheze Saleh said the detention “has completely upended our lives”, adding, “Our children are in desperate need of their father and miss him dearly. As a mother of three children, I desperately need his support to take care of them and me.”
A spokesman for Georgetown University said that Badar Khan Suri had been “granted a visa to enter the United States to continue his doctoral research on peacebuilding in Iraq and Afghanistan”.
His detention comes at a time when several students and academics have been investigated by US immigration officials in recent weeks.

Columbia student Leqaa Kordia, who is a Palestinian from the West Bank, was arrested for “overstaying her student visa”.
