Bed rest during pregnancy: get the facts
It is not likely to remain in bed delaying delivery and early childbirth, and could generate health problems.

When she is pregnant, a recipe to stay in bed may seem like a welcome break. Actually, however, movement restrictions during pregnancy can present health risks. This is what you need to know.
Is bed rest recommended?
There is no evidence that rest in bed during pregnancy, home or hospital, is effective to treat premature delivery or prevent premature delivery.
Can you help the activity restriction?
If you have had an episode of suspicion of premature work or has a high risk of premature delivery, your medical care provider could recommend the restriction of activities. This might mean to raise items heavier than 20 pounds (approximately 9 kilograms) and limit recreational exercise, particularly strength training and heavy work. You can also include changing your work schedule, if you imply working more than 40 hours a week, night shifts, prolonged position and heavy physical work.
If you have stopped a premature (arrested) episode and experiences an increase in the frequency or intensity of contractions after sex, your medical care provider may recommend avoiding sexual activity.
If your water breaks before the delivery (breakup of membranes), it has a low placenta, or its placenta partially or totally covers its cervix (previous placenta), its medical care provider will discuss the avoidance of avoiding activities such as sex and exercise.
Understand side effects
Bed rest during pregnancy can present health risks, which include:
- A blood clot in a deep vein, like a vein in the leg (venous thromboembolism)
- Decrease in bone mass (bone demineralization)
- Musculoskeletic and cardiovascular deciding
- Stress due to self -care problems, child care problems and concerns about loss of employment or finance
If your medical care provider recommends bed rest or activity restrictions, ask you to discuss the reasons. Meanwhile, grant yourself to stay healthy and the day you can keep your baby in your arms.
