The Ernakulam Rural police in Kerala on Thursday (March 20, 2025) arrested two suspected irregular migrants belonging to Bangladesh from Angamaly for violations of norms under the Foreigners Act, 1946.

The arrested are Altab Ali, 27 and Monirul Molla, 30. Altab belongs to Satkhira district of Bangladesh, while Monirul is a native of Shyamnagar.

According to the first information report (FIR) filed by the Angamaly police, the two were nabbed from a building in Pantra colony near Moonamparambu in Angamaly. They were working as masons at construction sites. Reportedly, the two had crossed the border to West Bengal in 2017, where they had secured fake Aadhaar cards with the assistance of agents and later travelled to Kerala, it said.

Phone chats

The inspection of mobile phones of the accused revealed that they were in contact with several persons in Bangladesh. The phone chats also revealed their frequent contacts with persons in Bangladesh.

On interrogation, they reportedly confessed to have secured Aadhaar cards through agents for ₹500. The Aadhaar cards had mentioned them as residents of North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, according to the police.

The police are also interrogating the residents who helped them here.

The drive against illegal migrants was launched by District Police Chief (Ernakulam Rural) Vaibhav Saxena. A woman arrested from Bengal Colony in Perumbavoor in January 2025 was the first to be nabbed as part of the drive. This was followed by more arrests from Angamaly and Perumbavoor, and fake identitification documents were reportedly seized from them.
