Brussels:
The UN Agency Chief for the UN, expressed his dismay on Wednesday in the shock of President Donald Trump for the United States to take care of the Gaza Strip and resettle its people.
Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees, told AFP in an interview in Brussels that it was not “of course” what the idea implied, which made it difficult to comment on a “sensitive topic.”
“It’s very surprising, but we have to see what it means in concrete terms,” Grandi said.
Trump made his announcement to audible gasps on Tuesday during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom he organized in the White House for conversations.
In a proposal that lacked details, Trump said he would make the enclave beaten by the war “incredible” by eliminating bombs and debris without exploiting, and reconstructing it economically.
Grandi also said that his agency, UNHCR, was in the process of “renegotiating” the support of the United States after Washington announced a freezing of most American aid.
“All this is very fluid at this time, which is a problem because we are an organization that cannot expect too much,” said Grandi.
Currently, the United States represented up to 40 percent of all contributions received by UNHCR, he said.
