The new Prime Minister of Lebanon formed on Saturday the first complete government of the country since 2022.
President Joseph Aoun announced in a statement that he had accepted the resignation of the former caregiver’s government and signed a decree with the new Prime Minister Nawaf Salam forming the new government.
The cabinet of 24 Salam ministers, divided evenly between the Christian and Muslim sects, formed less than a month after he was named, and arrives at a time when Lebanon is fighting to rebuild his southern region. War between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group. An agreement of Alto the American negotiation fire ended the war in November.
Lebanon is also in the midst of a paralyzing economic crisis, now in its sixth year, which has mistreated its banks, destroyed its state electricity sector and left many in poverty unable to access their savings.
Salam, diplomat and former president of the International Court of Justice, promised to reform the Judicial Power of Lebanon and the mistreated economy and achieve stability in the problematic country, which has faced numerous economic, political and security crises for decades.
Although Hezbolá did not support Salam as prime minister, the Lebanese group made negotiations with the new prime minister on Shiite Muslim seats in the government, according to the power exchange system of Lebanon.
The new authorities of Lebanon also mark a change of leaders who are close to Hezbollah, since Beirut hopes to continue improving ties with Saudi Arabia and other gulf nations that have been concerned about the growing political and military power of Hezbollah during the last decade .
At the beginning of January, former Army Chief Aoun was elected president, ending the void of that position. He was also a candidate not backed by Hezbollah and the key allies.
Aoun has shared similar feelings to Salam, also promising to consolidate the state’s right to “monopolize the transport of weapons”, in an apparent reference to Hezbollah’s arms.
