The president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Philemon Yang, on Friday (February 7, 2025) congratulated Karnataka Prime Minister, Siddaramaiah, for leading pro-women programs to promote socio-economic and political equity in the State, officials said.

Mr. Yang expressed his desire that Karnataka’s success stories will be shared in future UN workshops, authorities added.

Mr. Yang, who assumed the position in the global agency in September 2024, previously served as Prime Minister of Cameroon.

According to an official statement, the main secretary of the Government of Karnataka, Shalini Rajneesh, welcomed Mr. Yang with a bouquet made by the women of the Self -help group of the silk capullos, showing the sustainability initiatives of the state government, aligned with the vision of the United Nations 2030.

He was also presented with a book about Karnataka, which reflects the issue of UN unity in diversity.

“The UN president congratulated Karnataka’s prime minister for leading pro-women programs to promote socio-economic and political equity in the state. He expressed his desire that Karnataka’s success stories will be shared in future UN workshops so that other countries can adopt these best practices, ”said the CM office statement.

Mr. Yang asked how Karnataka has constantly qualified among the main states to achieve the main sustainable development objectives (SDGs).

He praised the initiatives of the state government in the promotion of gender equity through the Program of Five Guarantees, which focuses on women as the main beneficiaries.

The guarantees include ‘Gruha Lakshmi’, where ₹ 2,000 monthly assistance to the head of women of each family and ‘Shakti’ are provided: free trips for women in public transport buses.

Mr. Yang also recognized Karnataka’s advances in information technology, software development, artificial intelligence and their role as a global research and innovation center, officials declared.
