In preparation to organize the World Expo 2025, Osaka, one of the largest cities in Japan, has implemented an innovative initiative to improve its image as an international tourist destination. As of January 27, the city has imposed an integral prohibition of public smoking, which covers roads, parks, squares and other public areas. This prohibition extends not only to traditional cigarettes but also to vapeo products, with offenders who face a fine of 1,000 yen (approximately $ 6).

According to officials in the city of Osaka, the main objective of this initiative is to create a safe, safe and comfortable environment for residents and visitors. By expanding the non -smoking areas to cover the entire city, Osaka aims to promote a cleaner and more beautiful urban landscape. As indicated in an official announcement, “this initiative points not only to beautify the city but also to guarantee a safe and comfortable life environment for residents and visitors.”

The national laws of Japan already prohibit smoking in establishments such as restaurants, offices and public transport, with some cities implementing additional prohibitions in public places. In addition, the country has strict regulations on the consumption of tobacco among minors, with individuals under 20 years of age who are prohibited from smoking and buying tobacco products.

Despite these measures, Japan still fights with a significant smoking population. According to the World Health Organization, the prevalence of tobacco consumption among Japanese citizens has decreased from approximately 32% in 2000 to about 16% in 2022. A 2022 survey conducted by the Japan Ministry of Health revealed that the 14.8% of adults in the country smoke, leading the ministry to establish the objective of reducing the national smoking rate to 12%.

In comparison, the United States reports a significantly higher smoking rate, with 19.8% of adults who admit the current use of tobacco product in 2022, according to centers for disease control and prevention.

To facilitate a transition without problems to the new regulations, the local government of Osaka has created a map that indicates areas where smoking is still allowed. Similar antitabaco measures have been successfully implemented in other Japanese cities, including Tokyo, which introduced strict regulations before the 2020 Olympic Games.

The issue of smoking in Japan has also caught attention to the behavior of public figures, particularly those who participate in minor smoking. A remarkable example is Shoko Miyata, captain of the women’s gymnastics team in Japan, which retired from the Summer Olympic Games in Paris last year after admitting smoking and drinking at the age of 19.

From now on, Osaka has spent 164.7 billion yen ($ 1.16 billion) in the event, which also includes important changes in the infrastructure. Expo 2025 will be a 6 -month matter, from April 13 to October 13.
