Paris, France:
A French police officer has been ordered to pay 1,000 euros ($ 1,000) after he described a woman, who filed a complaint of sexual assault, such as a “WH ***”, said on Saturday a source close to the case. In a case that caused outrage in France, the woman, then 34, filed a complaint at a Paris police station in February 2022, saying that she had been assaulted in the street after several drinks on one night.
Later, a male police officer called her, leaving a message in her content asking her to return and end the paperwork.
Thinking that he had hung, then he began to insult her, calling her “wh ***” twice and a “fat Wh ***” once.
The case caused an outrage of the activists, who said they reflected how many police officers treated victims of sexual violence.
In a rare comment of this type, then Interior Minister of France, Gerald Darmanin, said the 33 -year -old should be fired. The policeman was accused of “non -public insult due to gender.” But a French court cleared the criminal responsibility police in January 2024.
During the trial, the officer apologized and said he had to beg Darmanin to maintain his job.
The woman appealed against the decision, asking the judicial authorities to recognize the misunderstanding of the officer.
On January 30, the Paris Court of Appeals stood on the woman’s side and said the police should pay 1,000 euros, according to a copy of the ruling seen by AFP.
The police officer apologized repeatedly for his comments, but insisted that they were simply an expression of his discomfort due to procedural irregularities.
In his ruling, the court found that “it cannot be disputed that the term ‘La Putea’ (Wh ***) repeated several times is offensive and, in view of the context, aimed at (the plaintiff) due to his sex.”
The woman’s lawyer, Arie Alimi, said it was necessary to “go to” to attract attention to bias “towards victims of sexual and gender violence and towards the victims of police officers.”
A police officer did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
