A 29 -year -old Irish tourist fell 1,900 feet to his death while taking photos at a Bulgarian skiing station, Metro reported. The incident occurred near the city of Bansko, at the foot of HIV, the second highest mountain in Bulgaria. The tourist lost his balance while capturing panoramic opinions with a group, suffering serious injuries during autumn. A mountain rescue team took him to a hospital in Razlog, where he died of his wounds.
“Despite all the efforts of our medical team, he finally succumbed to his serious injuries,” said Dr. Valentin Belchev.
A spokesman for the Foreign Affairs said that “he is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.” They added: “As with all consular cases, the department does not comment on the details of individual cases.”
Hidden at the foot of the Pirin mountains, 97 miles south of Sofia, Bansko has become an access point for ski enthusiasts looking for an alternative to the crowded Alps. The city welcomed a record of 190,000 visitors last winter, marking a significant meaning of 35,000 people from the previous season.
Earlier this month in Italy, an avalanche swept a group of five skiers on the eastern face of Punta Valgrande, a peak of 9,373 feet near the Swiss border. The mortal incident occurred around noon, despite a warning of level three avalanche in its place, indicating a “considerable danger” above 6,900 feet.
Three skiers lost their lives after they were dragged hundreds of meters in the slope. Meanwhile, the two survivors were transferred by plane to the hospital by helicopter. This devastating incident occurred only one week after two hikers died in a separate avalanche in the same region. On January 5, one of the hikers was dragged into a frozen lake, while the other was buried under the snow.
