Elkhart, Ind. (CBS) – Three people are dead, including a suspect, and two police officers were injured in a shooting in a grocery store in northern Indiana.
The police were called Martin’s supermarket in East Jackson Boulevard in Elkhart, Indiana, about 15 miles east of South Bend, around 5:30 pm, said Elkhart Police Department in a statement. They found two victims who had been shot dead inside the store.
The officers then exchanged shots with the suspect of shooting outside the store. Two officers were injured and the suspect was shot dead, said Elkhart police department.
An officer was treated and discharged from the hospital from Monday night, while the other remained hospitalized in “fair but stable condition,” said the police.
There was no immediate word about what caused the shot, but the researchers said there was no threat to the public.
“In this horrible situation, words cannot express the pain that is felt in our community when a tragic incident like this occurs,” said Elkhart police chief Dan Milanese, in a statement. “This pain is especially felt by the victim’s families, the officers who responded, the families of the wounded officers and all witnesses of this tragic incident.”
