South Korean prosecutors accused the dismissed president Yoon Suk Yeol on Sunday in relation to his controversial and brief imposition of the martial law last month, Yonhap news agency reported. The Prosecutor of the Central District of Seoul accused Yoon of an alleged rebellion related to its decree of December 3 that triggered a massive political agitation in the country.
However, the Prosecutor’s Office has not yet issued any official comment on the accusation. Previously, Yoon was accused and arrested by the martial law decree.
The Constitutional Court is deliberating separately whether to formally dismiss Yoon as president or restore it.
Yoon has denied having acted badly.
Yoon, a conservative, has flatly denied having acted badly and has described his martial law as a legitimate act of government aimed at creating public awareness about the danger of the National Assembly controlled by the Liberals, who obstructed his agenda and dismissed senior officials.
During his announcement of the martial law, Yoon called the Assembly “a den of criminals” and promised to eliminate the “shameless followers of North Korea and the antistatal forces.”
“The reason for the declaration of martial law was not a warning to the opposition. He was trying to appeal to people to undergo strict supervision and criticism of the opposition, ”Yoon said at a hearing in the Constitutional Court.
“For many warnings that I would have made to the opposition, they would have been useless,” he said. The South Korean president was suspended by the Assembly on December 14.
Yoon’s martial law was the first of this type in South Korea in more than 40 years.
With a duration of six hours, Yoon’s martial law, the first of this type in South Korea for more than 40 years. Yoon sent troops and police officers to the National Assembly, but enough legislators managed to enter the assembly chamber and requested the end of the emergency decree in a unanimous vote.
Yoon’s martial law decree has shaken the policy and financial markets of South Korea and has damaged its international image. Yoon’s subsequent challenge and the impulse of the opposition to overthrow it have also intensified the already serious internal division of South Korea.
