New Delhi:
A group of parliamentarians of the Bharatiya Janata party presented a violation of a parliamentary privilege notice against the deputy of Congress, Sonia Gandhi on Monday, alleging the use of “derogatory words and slander” to describe President Druguadi Murmu while approaching a joint session of Parliament last week.
The comments, alleged the parliamentarians, were destined to “reduce the dignity of the highest position.”
“We wrote this with great dismay on certain incomparable, derogatory and degrading comments made recently made by Sonia Gandhi, a member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), against the president of India, which guarantee a serious consideration and a disciplinary action,” the notice said.
“It is with deep concern that we highlight this statement … that it seems to degrade the height and dignity of the president of India, the greatest constitutional authority of our nation.”
“Such comments not only undermine the dignity of the office, but also violate the holiness of parliamentary conventions,” said BJP parliamentarians in their letter to the president of Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhankhar.

Mrs. Gandhi’s comment argued, “in no way to obtain the benefit of parliamentary privileges”, citing a sentence of the Supreme Court that said that the abuse of privileges by an MP was “difficult to digest.”
“In addition, even parliamentary ethics and the code of conduct prescribe that no member pronounces defamatory words against others … This assumes meaning when it comes to the president of India, and that also, when talking within parliamentary facilities.”
The comments, they argued, were “a clear manifestation of the elitist and antibal mentality of Mrs. Gandhi, who has not yet understood the struggle and sensitivity of a poor tribal.”
“Given the seriousness of this problem, we humbly urge you to have knowledge and initiate appropriate disciplinary action against Sonia Gandhi,” wrote the BJP parliamentarians, asking for “exemplary action.”
