Pune:
The number of deaths of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) in the Pune de Maharashtra district reached six after a 63-year-old man died, a health official said Thursday.
He was admitted to a hospital in the Sinhgad Road area after he complained of fever, loose movements and weakness in the lower limb and GBS diagnosed him, said the official.
“His condition deteriorated on Wednesday and died of acute ischemic stroke,” said the health official of the Pune Municipal Corporation.
He added that of the six deaths, five are suspicions of deaths from GBS, while one is a confirmed fatality of the ailment.
With the detection of three new cases, the number of GBS suspects in Pune rose to 173, said a statement from Maharashtra Health Department.
“Of these, 140 have been diagnosed with GBS. Of the 173, a total of 34 patients are limits of the Municipal Corporation of Pune, 87 of newly added villages in the PMC area, 22 of Pimpri Chinchwad Civic Limits, 22 of parts Rural district, and eight from other districts, “said the statement.
Of the 173, a total of 72, 55 have been downloaded in the ICU and 21 are on fan support, he added.
GBS is a rare condition in which a person’s immune system attacks peripheral nerves, resulting in muscle weakness, loss of leg and/or arms sensation, as well as problems of swallowing or breathing.
Severe cases can lead to almost total paralysis. The GBS is more common in adults and men, although people of all ages can be affected.
