Grand Rapids, Mich. – A woman from the West of Michigan is accused of turning on a fire in the house that killed her 12 -year -old daughter who was caught in a room.
“This is a surprisingly cruel and unimaginable crime committed by a mother against her three children,” said Grand Rapid police chief Eric Winstrom.
The boy died Monday night, two days after fire in Grand Rapid. Two other children, aged 7 and 10, survived.
Winstrom said that the 46 -year -old mother eliminated the smoke detectors from the house and poured lighter liquid before putting the fire. He was outside when the police arrived.
The screams from the inside of the house “will live in our heads for the rest of our lives,” said Fire Chief Brad Brown on Monday.
The mother was in custody waiting for an appearance in court. Prosecutor Chris Becker said mental health probably played a role in the fire.
“I think that’s what is going to come out,” he said.
