On Wednesday night, at 8:53 pm (local time), the Washington DC Police Department received multiple calls for an plane accident on the Potomac River.
PSA was operating Flight 5342 of American Eagle, from Wichita, Kansas to Washington Reagan National Airport. 60 passengers and four crew members were aboard the plane, said American Airlines.
The helicopter, a Black Hawk Sikorsky H-60, had three soldiers on board, reported the AFP news agency, citing the US army.
Currently, there is a lack of clarity about the number of injured passengers, the authorities fear deaths. “While we still don’t know how many on board they were lost, we know there are deaths,” said Ted Cruz, a Texas American senator.
DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), the Metropolitan Police Department and multiple associated agencies are currently coordinating a search and rescue operation on the Potomac River. There is no confirmed information about victims at this time, police said.
The Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) ordered the basis of all aircraft at Reagan airport, and Washington police said in X that “multiple agencies” were responding to the scene of the accident in the Potomac.
The FAA and the National Transportation Security Board (NTSB) will investigate with the latter leading it.
The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said he has been completely informed about the “terrible” accident at Reagan National Airport. In a statement, the president said he is monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise.
