Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated a telephone conversation with Donald Trump on Monday, a week after his inauguration as president of the United States, and congratulated his “dear friend in his historic second term.”

The prime minister stressed that New Delhi is still committed to a “mutually beneficial and reliable association” with Washington.

“Nice to talk to my dear friend President @realdonaldtrump @potus. He congratulated him for his historic second mandate. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and reliable association. We will work together for the well -being of our people and to global peace, prosperity, and Security, “PM Modi published in X.

This was the first conversation between both leaders since the return of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to the White House.

Trump began his second term last Monday with a wave of executive actions aimed at reviewing the immigration of the United States, and the H1-B visas that allow companies to take foreigners with specific qualifications to the United States.

India is among the largest sources of legal migration to the United States, but tens of thousands of Indians have also illegally entered the country in recent years by crossing Canadian and Mexican borders.

India is prepared to recover its citizens who reside illegally in the United States, said Foreign Minister Jaishankar, after meeting with the United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in Washington, a day after the inauguration Trump.

“We want Indian talent and Indian skills to have maximum opportunity worldwide. At the same time, we also firmly oppose illegal mobility and illegal migration,” said Mr. Jaishankar, who attended Trump’s inauguration , he replied on Wednesday to a consultation in the news reports that India was working with the Trump administration on deportation of around 18,000 Indians who are undocumented or have passed their visas.

“Then, with each country, and the United States is no exception, we have always considered that if any of our citizens are illegally, and if we are sure that they are our citizens, we have always been open upon their legitimate return to India” , said.

Rubio had “emphasized the desire of the Trump administration to work with India to advance economic ties and address concerns related to irregular migration,” said state department spokesman Tammy Bruce, in a reading after the meeting on Tuesday .

On Friday, the spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, said that India is looking for a “larger and more more ambitious” relationship with the United States and indicated his preparation to work with the Trump administration to address issues such as the illegal immigration and trade.

The most recent census in the United States showed that its population of Indian origin had grown by 50 percent to 4.8 million in the decade to 2020, while more than a third of the almost 1.3 million Indian students studying abroad In 2022 they were in the United States.
