Murder in Mahim Review: A criminal drama with an important social message

The murder in Mahim, the new original Jiocinema series based on the novel of the same name by Jerry Pinto, is a crime thriller who tells the story of a brutal murder of a gay sex worker in a public bath at the Mahim railway station of Mumbai. Starring the popular actions of characters Vijay Raaz and Ashutosh Rana, the series combines the narrative of conventional crime thriller with social comments, putting their actions to the front and the center of development research.

Throughout eight episodes, the RAAZ Police Inspector and the former frog journalist, who are now separate friends, try to solve the horrible case of their own different forms. Through the course of the investigation, they take us to gay clubs, queer parties, demonstrations and the prohibited bylanes of Mumbai, where the gloomy and alarming world of gay prostitution exists after dusk. The series is immersed in the lives of sex workers, who represents their difficult situation and persistence with discernible attention.

While Mahim murder seems a bit overloaded and predictable with beaten plots, family lagoons and the social commentary of the hands damage to the beginning, it soon becomes an unmissable work of art with powerful performances. If you are a bit patient with the series, at least until the third episode, a film delight awaits you that absorbs complex issues effortlessly.

The program develops the various layers of homophobia and abuse, from offensive insults and cruelty directly driven by prejudices to crimes that catch honey where queer people, who are being chanthaded, have nowhere to resort to help, including the police. Mahim murder covers the impact of homophobia on all classes; Since the queers without money are forced to prostitute themselves to even those positioned to powerful ranges, terrified to leave the closet, the series analyzes the concerns of the LGBTQ community with a wide lens. The representation of queer lives is also done with a natural tone and is not presented as forced, too dramatic or pompous.

There is a particular scene that shows two lesbian lovers in a panic in the room when their parents, who still do not know about their sexuality, are scored. Fortunately, the reaction of all the characters is measured and innocent and the scene normalizes the queer lives.

However, Mahim murder also tries to play it safely at some points, especially when it is shown that Peter Fernandes and his wife and his wife feel uncomfortable with the possibility that his son be gay. Clueless of what could be the “remedy” of this “condition”, in some scenes, the couple is presented as a fictional model of what could be wrong with a father of a queer child, just to become what should be An ideal father like later.

However, the program is not just homosexuality. Mahim murder also subtly assumes the conflicts and complexities of a father-son relationship. What a beautiful representation! It is very rare that the Indian and television industry collects this issue and does justice. Whether it is the separate relationship between Shiva by Vijay Raaz and his grumpy father, played by Shivaji Satem (of the Pradyman fame of ACP of Cid) or Shiva and his teenage son, who slowly separates, the series handles the dynamic With tenderness. I could find me smiling in so many scenes in the second half of the show, some of which evoked the funny relationship between the grunting father of Amitabh Bachchan and the stubborn daughter of Deepika Padukone in Piku.

There is a scene, which will perhaps sit with me for a long time, where a Junior police officer finds the dirty magazines of his teenage son. You would expect the warning to follow, but the comic character wisely handles the situation without pushing your child to a well of guilt and shame. It is a simple but powerful scene that represents the tenderness not said between a father and a son.

Mahim murder also adopts a satirical position against the media promoted by sensationalism and indifferent police officers, who conveniently distort the facts before chewing “brilliant written news writings” or “official statements” without any source of Reliable information, adding fuel to the already furious fire of homophobia. There is a scene in which the press is seen accusing an old man of being a pedophile and homophobic monster in the flimal terrain. As the media inquisition accumulates, the character observes impotent to angry protesters outside his home. The fictitious scene is not far from the facts, underlining several similar incidents of real life in which news reporters conveniently hired ethics to click and views.

Although Mahim murder has many intense sequences that are delayed in smaller nuances of psyche and human emotions, manufacturers have perfectly achieved a balance with frequent comic relief to break the tension, often necessary for a film or show with a Stark show. Social message to attract the masses, which otherwise would not resort to or even have access to selected cinema approved by critics. Manufacturers have made a decent attempt to transmit complex and important issues in an accessible and tasty way, without compromising the complexities of the subject in question.

The murder in Mahim crawls in the first episodes, but with its moving history, powerful performances and brilliant cinematography, the series shines slowly but surely.
