Mount pleasant, Mich. – A biblical verse will be eliminated from the entrance of a new prison in the center of Michigan after critics said it was a support from the Government of Religion.
“Blessed are the peace forces of La Paz because the children of God will be called” it was prominently exhibited at the Criminal Justice Center of Isabella. It is attributed to Jesus Christ in the New Testament.
Sheriff Michael Main said he wanted to honor the lifeguards and the police, not to promote religion. But he said the words will be eliminated, The morning sun reported.
“To ensure that the planned message remains clear and inclusive, we will develop a new slogan that continues to express our gratitude for public security personnel,” Main told the newspaper.
The Freedom from Religion Foundation, based in Wisconsin, sent a letter to county officials, saying that the message in the building would violate the decisions of the United States Supreme Court on the separation between the Church and the State.
“This is explicitly a Christian appointment, and only a Christian event,” said lawyer Samantha Lawrence.
The prison will open soon.
