Imphal:
The MERIPUR Integrity Coordinating Committee (COCOMI) has urged the central government to establish a narcotic office dedicated in the northeast region.
The conglomerate of civil society organizations based in the capital of the Imphal state also called on the center to declare the region as a “drug drug area.”
In a memorandum aimed at the main ministers of the northeastern states, Cocomi, Khuraijam Athouba, said: “We urge the Indian government to officially declare the northeastern region as an emergency drug trace zone to highlight the seriousness of the situation and mobilize national resources accordingly “
The Cocomi demanded the establishment of an “specialized office or strength dedicated to fighting drug trafficking and narco terrorism in the region.”
The office must work transparently and coordinate with state governments and local authorities, Cocomi said in the memorandum.
The organization requested an exhaustive investigation into “alleged complicity of individuals and influential entities in Manipur, Mizoram and the state of Chin de Myanmar to support narco terrorism activities.”
He sought measures to destroy the infrastructure that supports drug smuggling and illegal arms trafficking as well.
