The Malayalam filmmaker, Shafi, died in a private hospital in Kochi on Saturday. He was 56 years old.
Rasheed MH, popularly known as Shafi, had received treatment after suffering a stroke on January 16. He remained critical for several days before his death, hospital sources confirmed. Shafi breathed the last at 12:25 am on January 25.
The actor Vishnu Unnikrishnan confirmed the news on social networks. He wrote on Facebook: “Shafi Sir has gone, leaving behind laughs and unforgettable stories that will be appreciated forever. Tributes!”
Shafi began his career as a deputy director under the famous filmmaker Rajenan. He made his debut as director with The One Man Show in 2001. In the course of his career, which covered more than two decades, Shafi directed more than ten films.
His collaborations with the actor Dileep resulted in several successful films, including Kalyananaraman, Marykkundoru Kunjadu and two countries.
Other notable works in his career included Pulival Kalyanam, Thommanum Makkalum, Mayavi and Chattambinadu, which helped consolidate his reputation as one of the main directors of Malayalam’s cinema. His most recent management project was the 2022 Aanandam Paramanandam film.
Shafi’s older brother, Rafi, is part of the famous duo of writer and director RafiCartin, while his uncle was the late filmmaker Siddique.
