Chicago (CBS/AP) – A man was shot dead by an Indiana deputy after an altercation during a traffic stop on Sunday afternoon, said Indiana State Police. Around 4:15 PM, a deputy of the Jasper County Sheriff made a traffic stop near the Pulasski County line in SR 14. According to the ISP, the officer tried to arrest the suspect, but the authorities say the Suspicious resisted and an altercation occurred.
“There was an altercation between the suspect and the officer, which resulted in the officer to shoot his weapon and fatally hurt the suspect,” Isp said in a written release.
Police said that during the traffic stop, the suspect was in possession of a firearm.
Jasper’s county identified the person killed as Matthew Huttle, 42, of Hobart, Indiana.
“Our condolences are with the family of the deceased, since any loss of lives is traumatic for those close to Mr. Huttle,” said Sheriff Patrick Williamson.
An investigation is ongoing. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative license for standard protocol, according to ISP.
The authorities did not say what could have caused the traffic stop.
In 2023, Huttle was sentenced to six months of custody after declaring himself guilty of entering a restricted building. He had traveled with his uncle to Washington to attend the Pro-Trump demonstration of January 6, 2021, and both entered the Capitol. Huttle was inside for 16 minutes and recorded it on video.
“He is not a true believer in any political cause,” said defense lawyer Andrew Hemmer in a judicial presentation. “Instead, he went to the rally because he thought it would be a historical moment and had nothing better to do after leaving jail” for a crime of driving.
