The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kharagpur has opened an installation to take care of the mental and physical well -being of its students, claiming that it is the first initiative of its kind among the IIT throughout the country.

The installation, called Zen Lounge, is essentially a yoga and meditation room located within the Snig Girls shelter of the Institute; It was recently inaugurated and, according to the Institute, is “dedicated to promoting full attention, well -being and mental well -being for students”, marking an important milestone in their effort to promote holistic education.

“[The facility has opened] With the generous support of Viji Narayanan, a distinguished student of Iit Kharagpur who lived in the same girl hostel during his university years from 1986 to 1991. His vision is to create a space for full attention that derives from his own transformative experiences in The Institute at the Institute and its understanding of the importance of mental well -being in academic and personal growth, ”said the institute in a statement.

He cited Mrs. Narayanan saying during the inauguration that Iit Kharagpur complemented academic rigor with the personal growth of students and that Zen Lounge was a reflection of that philosophy. “I hope it offers all those who cross their doors a peaceful retirement and the opportunity to nurture both the mind and the body, balancing the pressures of academic life,” he said.

The institute said that Zen Lounge aimed to integrate the best of both worlds: “Western lifestyle with natural Vedic principles”, to promote preventive medical care and support mental health in an integral way. “Create a holistic well -being transformative culture to train people not only to survive, but prosper in all aspects of this world,” the institute said.

His deputy director Rintu Banerjee said Zen Lounge as a space where students could stop, reflect and find moments of calm amid rigorous academic schedules. “An initiative for the first time among the IIT, the Zen Lounge reflects our commitment to promote mental health and holistic well -being among students. By encouraging the practice of yoga and meditation, our goal is to contribute to a healthier and more balanced student community in Iit Kharagpur, ”said Professor Banerjee.
