Nagpur:
While India fell to 19/2 in sixth for pursuing a modest objective of 249 in 50 overs, all Shubman Gill was thinking was positive and not taking too many risks and not getting too defensive. Gill Party Player did all these things, with a higher score for India with 87 and shared crucial associations with Shreyas Iyer (59) and Axar Patel (52) to help India a four WICKET victory over England in the first Odi of the three games series at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) stadium here Thursday.
India entered the game without the talismanic Virat Kohli, which was not available due to a right knee pain, and at that juncture losing Yashavi Jaiswal (15) and Rohit Sharma (2) Cheap was a recipe for disaster. But Gill hit with sense and Iyer playing a counterattack entry, helped India to a safe place.
Gill said his thoughts at 19/2 should be positive and play wisely as the Pacers were receiving help.
“Trying to be positive. There was a bit in him for fast bowling players. It goes on the back foot.
Gill said the batting was a bit difficult since the wickt got a little sticky in the second entries.
“I thought it was a bit of double pace. The spinners varied their rhythm well, when they withdrew slowly, it was coming back. It took into account to look at the Wickt Square and not try to hit the ground,” Gill said.
When asked about his role after being promoted to Vice-Capitán, Gill said nothing has changed for him in terms of batting.
“In the batting, it has not changed much, but in the field, I want to know what the thought is and what Rohit Bhai thinks and gives my contributions. He tells me that if you want to tell me something in the game, do not hesitate.” Gill said.
With the Champions Trophy in Dubai that is coming on the horizon, Gill would expect to continue along the same line in the next two hate against England and enter the CPI tournament with some great races behind him.
