How Donald Trump is using “rates” as a weapon

Washington, United States:

When President Donald Trump learned that Colombia had retreated the deportations of the United States, his threat of a mass commercial war established the bets: cooperate or otherwise.

The tariffs, as they were during their first term of 2017 to 2021, are Trump’s choice weapon on the global stage.

While it may be too early to know how successful they are a tactic that they are against the allies of the United States and the rivals like China, it shows how Trump, who is proud of his negotiation skills, will not hesitate to take a difficult line for get what you want.

‘Leverage’

After a roller coaster on Sunday with threats of duel tariffs between Washington and Bogotá, the White House said that Colombian president Gustavo Petro had retreated and accepted the terms of repatriating immigrants from the United States.

Trump had first threatened to raise tariffs of 25 percent over all imported Colombian goods in a heated response to Petro that refused to accept two military planes that transport deported migrants.

It was not clear if Leftist Petro had admitted his demand for migrants to be treated “with dignity.”

Airplanes sent by Bogotá to transport migrants would return on Monday or Tuesday “no later than Daniel García Pena, Colombian ambassador to the United States.

Eddy Acevedo, chief of cabinet of the group of non -partisan experts of Woodrow Wilson Center, said that Petro “quickly realized the amount of influence that the United States has with Colombia and that its reckless decision could endanger.”

“Only last year, Petro had no problem allowing 14,000 Colombians who were deported from the United States back to Colombia,” said Acevedo.

‘America first’ in action

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt hastened to declare victory on Sunday, saying: “Today’s events make the world clear that the United States is respected again.”

Trump himself echoed the feeling on Monday, telling journalists about Air Force One that “it serves the world well to look” the spit of Colombia.

Trump’s plan for mass deportations of migrants has put it in a possible collision course with governments in Latin America, the original home of most of the 11 million undocumented migrants estimated the United States.

“The message that is being sent is how willing is the Trump administration to use these tools, and the fact that they had the opportunity to make that point in the first week of the administration, I am sure, it is quite pleasant for them,” he said Kevin Whitaker, former American ambassador to Colombia, who now serves as a member not resident in the Atlantic Council.

True to the promises he made in the campaign, Trump spent his first week in power working to implement his diplomatic creed “America First”.

In doing so, he has also threatened to raise tariffs against Canada and Mexico if they did not meet their immigration demands.

He also announced the withdrawal of the United States of the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization (WHO) during a series of executive orders he signed.

In addition, Trump ordered a pause for foreign aid of the United States, with the exception of Egypt, Israel and emergency food aid, until a complete review is made to see if it is aligned with its agenda.

Trump has also threatened to “recover” the control of the Panama Canal, said it was in the best interest of Canada becoming state 51 and reaffirmed his desire to Annexar Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.

In the last case, Trump has shown tariffs against a NATO ally fellow.

And in the Davos forum last week, Trump in a video call told the audience of business leaders who were prepared to come and produce products in the United States, or prepare to pay tariffs.
