Awareness programmes and cleanliness drives marked the Swarnandhra-Swachh Andhra event in Kurnool, Nandyal and Anantapur districts on Saturday. The initiative was taken up as part of State government’s decision to take up cleanliness drives on every third Saturday of the month.
In Nandyal, Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand flagged off a rally at Chinna Cheruvu Katta and addressed the gathering. The Chief Secretary said that every individual is made a part of the initiative to keep every nook and corner of the State clean. As part of the programme, effort will be taken to clean garbage, remove plastic waste and other cleanliness activities held to keep the surroundings clean.
Mr. Vijayanand said that the garbage around Chinna Cheruvu will be cleared and the walking track given a new look as part of the initiative. As a part of the initiative, a programme would be taken up every month, which will involve the reuse of plastic. The Chief Secretary planted saplings also as part of the programme. Police belonging to all wings also participated in the cleanliness drive at all the police stations in the district.
In Kurnool Municipal Corporation (KMC) limits, district in-charge officer and principal secretary (Transport, Roads and Buildings) Kantilal Dande led the campaign by administering a pledge to the public to desist from using single-use plastic. He addressed the public at a programme organised at the Open Air auditorium opposite Kondareddy Buruju. He said that in earlier days, people used to carry copper water bottles or traditional bags, but the same have been replaced with plastic.
Mr. Kantilal Dande said that plastic causes harm to the human beings as it takes a very long time to degenerate and urged the people to stop using it in daily life. He appealed to the people to reuse the plastic rather than littering it. He further said that people should carry a jute bag whenever they visit a shop or a market. District Collector P. Ranjith Basha, KMC Commissioner S. Ravindra Babu and other officials also participated.
Meanwhile, on the instructions of Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikrant Patel, police personnel participated in the cleanliness drive at all the police stations and removed garbage and bushes from the areas near the stations.
Anantapur district Collector Vinod Kumar V. participated in a similar programme in Guntakal Municipality office and stressed on the need to maintain clean environments at house and office for better health. He said that haphazard throwing of plastic will lead to the clogging of drains and subsequently lead to the breeding of mosquitoes.
