A special court in Bengaluru on Thursday sentenced former Minister Sn Krishnaiah Setty and three others and sentenced them to three years in prison in a case of bank fraud of 2008.

Santhosh Gajanan Bhat, judge of the Special Session Court for Criminal Cases against MLA and previous and present parliamentarians, approved the order after finding enough material to establish charges against accused persons. The copy of the sentence has not yet been published.

Meanwhile, the Special Court released Mr. Setty and others on interim bail, valid for a month, allowing them to challenge the verdict before the Superior Court. The Court of First Instance has the jurisdiction in the law to grant the bond if the sentence does not exceed three years.

The Central Investigation Office (CBI) had registered a first information report (FIR) in 2008 based on a complaint of the Surveillance Officer of the former State Bank of Mysore (SBM) and presented a charge sheet under the provisions of the Indian Criminal Code and the corruption prevention law.

It was affirmed in the charges sheet that the manager of the SBM branch and others in collusion with each other, received loans of housing sanctioned several people through the companies Sri Balaji Krupa of Mr. Setty when presenting salary certificates manufactured of ITI, Beml, BMTC, Bescom and Bescom, and Ksrtc, etc. … and the branch manager had sanctioned loans to the extent of ₹ 7.17 million rupees.

The charges had declared that by accepting these false and manufactured documents, loans were sanctioned and the pending amount of the loan was a sum of ₹ 3.53 million rupees when the charging sheet was presented.

The Superior Court of Karnataka in March 2023 ordered the Special Court to complete the trial with an expedition.
