Five police personnel including two head constables attached to various police stations in Villupuram district have been sent on compulsory retirement for their alleged connivance with bootleggers in the hooch tragedy at Marakkanam, which claimed 14 lives in 2023.

The orders sending the five personnel – head constables Senthil Kumar (Arakandanallur station) and Velu (Roshanai station), and constables Prabhu (Sathiyamangalam), Muthukumar (Kanjanur) and Gunasekaran (Vikravandi) under compulsory retirement were issued by the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Villupuram Range) Disha Mittal.

According to a senior police officer, the retirement orders were issued based on the report of an inquiry committee. A departmental enquiry was conducted and the charges against them were proved.

The hooch tragedy reported on May 13, 2023 shook the State. Most of the victims hailed from Ekkiyarkuppam, a coastal hamlet near Marakkanam.
