The Indian school education system serves 24.8 million students in 14.72 Lakh schools with 98 Masters Lakh, revealed the 2024-25 economic survey presented today in Parliament. Of these, government schools comprise 69 percent of the total, enrolling 50 percent of students and using 51 percent of teachers, while private schools represent 22.5 percent, enrolling 32.6 percent of students and using 38 percent of teachers.
Total Higher Education Institutions (IEI) in the country have increased by 13.8 percent of 51,534 in 2014-15 to 58,643 in 2022-23. According to the survey, the IIT number in 2023 was recorded 23 compared to 16 in 2014, 20 IIM compared to the 13 IIM in 2014 and 780 medical schools in 2024-25 in comparison with 387 medical schools in 2013-24. The number of universities has also increased from 723 in 2014 to 1,213 in 2024.
The survey also stressed that the percentage of schools that have computers have increased from 38.5 percent in 2019-20 to 57.2 percent in 2023-2024. In addition, the percentage of schools with Internet facilities has increased from 22.3 percent in 2019-20 to 53.9 percent in 2023-2024.
School dropout rates have also shown a promising result with a constant decrease in recent years due to improvements in basic facilities, including the availability of sanitation and information and communication technologies (ICT). The recorded abandonment rate was 1.9 percent for the primary, 5.2 percent for upper primary and 14.1 percent for secondary levels.
To meet the rapid labor market, educational institutions on several levels are introducing courses in the technology of the new era. There has been a growing integration of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) in the educational system. In an effort to take advantage of technology to improve educators’ capabilities and prepare them for the demands of the 21st century, the government has launched MasterApp, a digital avant -garde platform.
The survey highlighted innovation such as peer teaching to achieve financial education and arithmetic objectives
The Minister of the Finance Union, Nirmala Sitharaman, presented the 2024-25 economic survey in Parliament today. The survey declared that the education and development of human capital are among the fundamental pillars of development and the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) is based on this principle.
