Washington DC:
The president of the United States, Donald Trump, ordered the end of the United States commitment to several United Nations (UN) agencies, including the Human Rights Council (ANHRC), while starting a comprehensive evaluation of financial assistance American to the multinational organization. The White House also stopped until the financing of the Palestinian Aid Agency (UNRWA) and ordered a review of the UN Cultural Agency.
According to the secretary of the White House staff, Will Scharf, these actions were taken in response to the “anti -American bias” perceived within these UN agencies. “In more general terms, the Executive Order requires a review of US participation and financing in the UN in the light of wild financing and levels of financing between different countries,” said Scharf.
The United States is among the 47 members elected by the UN General Assembly for three -year terms in the UN Human Rights Council. It was established to conclude its current term on December 31, maintaining the state of the observer today. The directive issued by the Trump administration seemed to rescind all US participation in the activities of the Council, which covers both the country’s specific human rights evaluations and investigations on particular violations of rights.
Trump asks the UN to ‘act together’
Criticizing on Tuesday to the president of the United States, Trump (local time) said the agency “was not well managed”, although it has potential.
“It has great potential and, according to the potential, we will continue to accompany it, but they have to act together. It is not well managed, to be honest, and they are not doing the job,” Trump, “Trump,” Trump, “Trump,” he told the journalists while stopping the commitment to the ANCRC and withdrew from the main membership of Unrwa.
“Many of these conflicts in which we are working must be resolved, or at least we should have help to solve them. It never seems that we receive help. That should be the main purpose of the United Nations,” he added.
The UN retreated
Washington is the largest UN taxpayer, followed by China, which represents 22 percent of the UN central budget and 27 percent of the peace maintenance budget.
Moving against Trump’s comment, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that the agency general, Antonio Guterres, “he has worked tirelessly to implement many reforms … to increase efficiency and innovation.”
“The United States support to the United Nations has saved innumerable lives and advanced world security. The Secretary General hopes to continue his productive relationship with President Trump and the United States government to strengthen that relationship in the turbulent world today” Said Dujarric.
The UN Security Council of 15 members, of which the United States is one of the five permanent members, is responsible for maintaining international peace and security. The UN has said that the United States currently owes a total of $ 2.8 billion, of which $ 1.5 billion are for the regular budget. These payments are not volunteers.
Trump said he was not looking to take money from the world body of 193 members, although he complained that Washington had to pay a disproportionate amount.
Israel vs Unrwa
The measure coincides with the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington, who has long criticized Unrwa, accusing him of anti-Israel incitement and his staff to be “involved in terrorist activities against Israel.”
The Israeli prohibition entered into force on January 30 that prohibits Unrwa from operating in its territory or communicating with the Israeli authorities. UNRWA has said that operations in Gaza and the West Bank will also suffer.
The UNHA General Commissioner, Philippe Lazzarini, said last week that the agency has been the objective of a “fierce misinformation campaign” to “portray the agency as a terrorist organization.”
The United States was the largest Donor in UNRWA, who provided $ 300 million, $ 400 million a year, but former President Joe Biden stopped financing in January 2024 after Israel accused a dozen Unrwa staff of participating in the Mortal October 7, 2023, attack by Palestinian militants Hamas Hamas that triggered the war in Gaza.
Then, the United States Congress formally suspended contributions to UNRWA up to at least March 2025. UNRWA provides help services, health and education to millions of Palestinians in Gaza, and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan.
The United Nations has said that nine UNRWA employees may have been involved in the attack of October 7, 2023 and were fired. It was also discovered that a Hamas commander in Lebanon, killed in September by Israel, had a work of Unrwa. The UN has promised to investigate all the accusations made and repeatedly asked Israel to evidence, which, according to him, has not been provided.
