The stampex exploded just one kilometer from the Triveni Sangam Ghat on the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya, when around 10 million pilgrims are expected to realize.
Akharas canceled his processions and postponed the sacred sauce after the stampede.
Uttar Pradesh Prime Minister Yogi Adityanath told journalists that some people were “seriously injured” in the incident, adding that the situation is under control.
He said that the pressure of the crowd remains and urged people to take a dip in the nearest Ghat and not give way to Sangam’s nose. “The elderly, children and patients with asthma should be extremely cautious and bathe in the ghats closest to them. All are gangs Ghats and all would get the same ‘Punya’ (divine blessings) as Mauni Amavasya,” he said.
The Interior Minister of the Union, Amit Shah, the Minister of Health of the Union, JP Nadda and the governor of Uttar Pradesh, Anandiben Patel, also called him to take stock of the situation, added the CM.
The Amrit Snan in Mauni Amavasya is the most significant ritual of Maha Kumbh. This year, the occasion is an additional spiritual importance due to a rare heavenly alignment known as ‘Tiveni Yog’, which occurs once every 144 years.
The Maha Kumbh 2025 has already witnessed more than 15 million pilgrims in the last 17 days. More than 4.80 devotees of millions of rupees took the Snan only on Tuesday, even more than Amrit Snan ‘in Makar Sankranti (3.5 million rupees), said the government of Uttar Pradesh.
Maha Kumbh began on January 13 and will continue until February 26.
