The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Monday that she does not believe that Donald Trump has a “defined plan” to get the Palestinians from Gaza, but said he welcomed a debate about the reconstruction of the territory.
The president of the United States said on Saturday that he wanted Jordan and Egypt to take people from Gaza, suggesting that “we only clean all that”, an idea quickly rejected by the Palestinian leaders, the Arab League, Jordan and Egypt.
Meloni, who attended the inauguration of Trump and hopes to position himself as a bridge between the US administration and the European Union, said it was “complex.”
“Trump is right when he says that Gaza’s reconstruction is obviously one of the main challenges we face, and that to succeed, however, a great participation of the international community is needed,” he told reporters during a visit to Saudi Arabia
“As for the issue of refugees, I do not believe, here again, that we face a definite plan. I think we face discussions with regional actors, which certainly need to participate in this, “he said.
The majority of the 2.4 million people from Gaza have been displaced, often several times, by the Israel-Ahamas War that began with the attack of Hamas to the south of Israel on October 7, 2023.
Trump said the territory hit by war had become a “demolition site”, and added that “over the centuries it has had many, many conflicts that site. And I don’t know, something has to happen.”
He said that moving the inhabitants of Gaza could be “temporarily or could be long term.”
For the Palestinians, any attempt to move them from Gaza would evoke dark historical memories of what the Arab world calls the “nakba” or catastrophe: the massive displacement of the Palestinians during the creation of Israel 75 years ago.
Meloni warned about the “significant impact” of Syrian refugees in several countries in the region, which “is not helping stabilization.”
“These are certainly very complex matters, but the fact that they are being discussed, even at an informal level with the actors in the region, in my opinion it means that we want to work seriously on the issue of gaza’s reconstruction,” she, ” She, “she,” she, “she,” she, “she,” she, “she,” she, “she,” she, “she,” she, “she,” she, “she,” she, “she,” she, “she” , she “, she”, she, “she,” she, “she,” she, “she,” she, “she,” she, “she,” she, “she”, she, “she”, she, “she,” “, she,” she, “she,” she, “she,” “, she,” she, “she,” she, “she,” she, “she,” said.
The Italian prime minister spoke with journalists during a trip to Saudi Arabia, where the two countries signed cooperation and industrial agreements worth around $ 10 billion (9.53 billion euros).
