The former Bayern Munich coach Niko Kovac will assume the position of Chief of Borussia Dortmund until 2026, Sports Director Lars Ricken confirmed on Wednesday. The 53 -year -old will replace Nuri Sahin, who was fired last week, with Dortmund since then led by the interim coach Mike Tullberg. “I can confirm that we have reached an agreement (with Kovac),” Ricken told Dazn after Dortmund’s 3-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League. “Mike Tullberg will lead the team on Saturday (in the League against Heidenheim), before Niko takes over Sunday.”
Earlier on Wednesday, the German newspaper Bild reported that Kovac and Dortmund had reached a “basic agreement” on the agreement, with the former Croatia international who is not willing to accept only take charge until the end of the current season.
Kovac, who left his last job as a Wolfsburg coach in March 2024, won the German Cup with Eintracht Frankfurt against Bayern in 2018, before taking the best work in Munich weeks later.
In Bayern, he won a double league and cup in 2018-19, but the club let him go to the next season.
Known for his disciplinary style and his focus on physical condition, Kovac will take over a Dortmund team that has had problems since he reached the final of the last season champions.
Dortmund feels 11 in the Bundesliga, 22 points behind Bayern leaders, and has won only one of his last eight games nationwide.
