The working group constituted to review the deaths of Olive Ridley Marina turtle has requested a stricter application of fishing regulations to address the high mortality rate of the species.

Directed by the director of Wildlife Rakesh Kumar dogra, the task force met on Monday (January 27, 2025) for the first time to review the deaths of the sea turtles along the coast of Chennai. It includes departments such as the environment and climate change, fishing, the coastal guard and the coastal protection committee.

Mr. Dogra said the working group was created to adopt a collective approach and gather the experience of different departments to address this problem. Three key measures should be applied: a prohibition of drag fishing, the use of exclusive turtle devices (TEDs) and restrictions on the prohibitive power of boat engines. Until now, 24 drags have been fined, and subsidies will not be provided to those who violate these regulations, he said.

During Monday’s meeting, it was decided to strengthen the application against drag fishing near the coast. The Marine Fishing Regulation Law Tamil Nadu, 1983, prohibits mechanized fishing vessels in five nautical miles of certain areas of nesting and reproduction during the nesting season. The authorities were also asked to strictly enforce TED in fishing networks. Ted are metal grilles that allow turtles to escape from drag networks, but fishermen have expressed concern that they reduce their capture and affect their livelihoods.

The forest department has intensified the post -mortem exams of turtles that have been washed on land, pointing to at least one increase of 50%, to quickly determine the cause of death.

An official statement said the fishing boats are turning off GPS transponders while they are at sea. The fishing department has advised against this practice, warning that the ships that do not follow the appropriate procedures will not be eligible for diesel subsidies and other government benefits.

Exact cause of death is not clear

Conservationists report that more than 1,000 turtle bodies have been found along the coast of Chennai and Chengalpartu since the second week of January, although the forest department has said that the figure is 706. Although the exact cause of the high Mortality is not clear, the authorities say that drag is the main reason.

Some fishermen believe that the difficult climate and strong currents can be carrying the corpses of Andhra Pradesh to the areas of Chennai and Chengalpattu. However, Mr. Dogra said the number of nests has also been lower, suggesting that the turtles that come here to Nest have been affected.

In addition, research institutions such as AIWC and Tanuvas have had the task of ongoing research on turtle mortality. They have also been advised to carry out long -term studies on turtle movements in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu to collect scientific data on their migration.
