Buenos Aires:
Argentina will retire from the World Health Organization, said President Javier Milei’s office on Wednesday, after the steps of the United States that announced their departure from the UN agency last month.
Milei’s decision was based on “deep differences regarding health management, especially during pandemic (COVID-19),” said spokesman Manuel Adorni to journalists, adding that Argentina would not “allow an international body interfere in our sovereignty. “
The measure also gave Argentina “greater flexibility to implement policies adapted to the context” locally, while guaranteeing “greater availability of resources,” he said.
The “anarchor-capitalist” “Milei is a declared fan of US President Donald Trump, who signed an order at a few hours after its inauguration on January 20 for the United States to withdraw from WHO, which has also criticized its management of the pandemia.
Washington was the biggest taxpayer to the organization based in Geneva, which Trump said he had “torn”, and the withdrawal of the United States could leave global health initiatives without funds.
Since he assumed the position in December 2023, Milei has destroyed public spending, having promised to maintain a zero budget deficit after years of excessive spending.
It is estimated that their austerity measures have inclined millions of people to poverty, but the country also registered its greatest commercial surplus in 2024, partly due to an import and expense depression.
Milei was the first foreign leader to visit Trump on his farm in Florida Mar-a-Lago after the victory of the American elections of the Republican.
