An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M), Parasuram Balasubramanian, has offered ₹5 crore to the institute’s AquaMAP – Centre for Water Management and Policy.

The amount will help establish a corpus fund for the centre’s growth and impact. AquaMAP is supported by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser.

The centre was established in 2022 with a seed grant from the alumnus, who is the CEO of Theme Work Analytics, and Krishnan Narayanan, President of Itihaasa Research and Digital.

Mr. Parasuram graduated with degrees in Engineering and Management in 1971 and 1973 respectively, and earned a Doctorate in Industrial Engineering. He is a founding member on AquaMAP’s governing board.

He said the centre had done stellar work in the past three years, and it was time to operate in higher orbits. “We seek projects that will have a national impact, going forward,” he said.

The Centre seamlessly integrates the technical expertise of IIT Madras faculty,

AquaMAP’s coordinator Ligy Philip said the centre seamlessly integrated the technical expertise of IIT-M faculty, and grassroots involvement through non-governmental organisations. As many as 26 faculty from various departments are involved in AquaMAP.

Since inception, the centre has been executing water and wastewater management projects in villages across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
