Women empowerment is not a commodity to export or import, but an achievement of women by themselves, said Supreme Court judge S.V.N. Bhatti, while giving a guest lecture on ‘Law and Women Empowerment’, at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) University in Tirupati on Thursday.
“To achieve women empowerment, the law can be used to provide rights and impose responsibilities on others. Article 13 of the Constitution provides equal rights to all, and everyone is equal before the law. It has also empowered each State to take positive measures in favour of the women,” said Justice Bhatti.
Although the Constitution grants women the right to live freely and independently, many are unable to enjoy those rights due to lack of awareness, Dr. Bhatti added. He cited some cases that appeared before him as a judge regarding some of the social problems faced by women. Later, he answered the questions raised by the students on women empowerment and gender equality.
On the occasion, SVIMS Director and Vice-Chancellor R.V. Kumar said that Justice Bhatti was a resident of Annamayya district and served as a Standing Council Member of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), and it is a matter of pride that the Justice of the apex court of India is from this district. He asked everyone to follow in his footsteps.
