Residents of various localities near Hosayellapur in Dharwad, who after taking exception to chemical fumes emanating from a landfill staged a protest on Tuesday, continued their agitation for the second day on Wednesday seeking immediate remedial measures.

They, however, withdrew their protest following a specific assurance from the municipal commissioner.

As part of their protest, the residents stopped garbage vehicles and insisted that they will not allow them to enter the landfill area unless their demands are met.

After being alerted, municipal Commissioner Rudresh Ghali rushed to the spot along with police officers and tried to reason with the protestors.

The residents said that the foul smell and chemical fumes emanating from the landfill area have made their life miserable in the adjoining localities that have nearly 20,000 houses.

Elders, pregnant women, children are complaining of breathlessness, itching, eye burns and other problems, they complained.

Despite their repeated pleas to shift the landfill site out of the residential area, the authorities have hardly done anything, they said.

The municipal commissioner then sought 30 days to find a permanent solution to the problem and also promised to deploy additional security staff to ensure that garbage is not set on fire.

Additionally, water will be sprayed regularly to prevent chemical reactions in the garbage dump. The residents withdrew their protest following the specific assurance from the municipal commissioner.
