The former Minister of Transportation of Indian origin of Singapore, S Iswaran, who was imprisoned last October for 12 months for corruption positions, was placed in “detention at home” on Friday, according to a news report.

Iswaran began his 12 -month prison mandate on October 7, 2024.

According to the prison law, inmates who show good prison conduct are eligible for remission after completing two thirds of their sentence or 14 days of their sentence, which ends later.

According to the channel report, prisoners who serve four weeks or more and who serve at least 14 days of their sentence are also eligible to be released in the home arrest scheme for a period that does not exceed 12 months.

SPS said that factors such as behavior, progress and response to rehabilitation during prison time are taken into account when determining eligibility for home arrest.

“(Iswaran) has been evaluated appropriate for the site of the scheme, since it is low risk of recidivism, did not commit any institutional crime in prison and has strong family support,” said the penitentiary service.

“During home arrest, inmates who have approved employment can leave the house during their work hours, while inmates who are generally unemployed only have a few hours out of the house in the afternoon,” he told The Channel Here Adrian Wee of Lighthouse Law LLC.

SPS added that last year, around 44 percent of the eligible inmates for home arrest were placed in the scheme.

Iswaran declared himself guilty on September 24, 202.4 to four positions under Section 165 of the Criminal Code, which prohibits all public servants from obtaining something valuable of someone involved with them in an official capacity.

These were to obtain value objects from the majority shareholder of Singapore GP, NGO Beng Seng, and the construction chief Lum Kok Seng, while he had portfolios that had official deals with the two men.

Iswaran also declared himself guilty of a position to obstruct justice by paying the cost of a flight to Doha.

Another 30 positions under section 165 were taken into consideration.

In all positions, he admitted having obtained SGD 403,300 (USD 300,000) on value objects for seven years, including musical tickets, Formula 1 events and football matches, as well as alcohol and a Brompton bicycle equipped for him For his 60th birthday.

He resigned from the position in January 2024 and made a voluntary return of the SGD 380,305.95. This refers to giving up the profits obtained illegally.

The NGO case is pending before the courts, while the cameras of the Attorney General have said they will not present charges against LUM.
