In schools throughout the country, teachers and administrators have been dealing with how to deal with this new tool. While some say they have benefits, others point out the negatives, such as cheating.

Taylor told CBS that he was open to use AI at the beginning. But, after seeing many identical essays, often full of false or misleading information that was obviously generated by AI, he decided to prohibit it.

“If you write a notice, there is boom! There is the answer. But that means that the student has now outsource all his thinking to a machine. They have not resolved and developed the skills themselves,” Taylor explained.

In Taylor’s philosophy classes, students have to complete hand -written tasks without any device. Instead of allowing AI to do all the work, students are encouraged to discuss their views, analyze the arguments of others and reach a conclusion about the right.

“Using it in a responsible way is important, but I think there must be some spaces in the classroom where it is prohibited and its use is eliminated,” Taylor said.

“As soon as it is prohibited, it is forbidden,” BickerStaff said. She believes that children will use AI so that it could be harmful if parents and educators do not allow or encourage their use.

Instead, she is teaching students and teachers how to write effective indications of AI, which, according to her, will improve learning and how to verify the results of AI.

While both BickerStaff and Taylor may not see the eyes of prohibitions, both believe in taking a proactive, balanced approach for AI.

“We are living a turning point unlike everything we live before,” said BickerStaff. “The generative AI is becoming omnipresent in many of our tools, social networks and devices. If it has a new iPhone, then it has generative models that are in their hands.”
