The state government is interested in celebrating long -standing elections for Bruhat Bengaluru MahanaGara Palike (BBMP) in July or August of this year and, according to reports, it is making the necessary preparations for the same.
Although the deadline of the previous BBMP Council ended in September 2020, the surveys were not carried out to date. In the midst of delays in the local elections, the former councilors of the Abdul Wajid and M. Shivraju Congress requested the Superior Court of Karnataka, urging an electoral process issued. However, the State Electoral Commission (SEC) cited the delimitation of the pending Sala and the completion of the reserve as reasons of the delay. The Superior Court directed the elections of 198 Halls in 2020, but the government expanded to 243 under the law of Palike de Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara, 2020. A stay of the subsequent Supreme Court allowed the government led by BJP to continue with the new neighborhoods.
However, after a change in the government in 2023, the number was reviewed at 225. Later, the Government introduced the Busy Government Law (GBA), 2024, which allows the city’s civic body divided into multiple corporations. Currently, a 14 -member committee is reviewing the bill and is expected to submit its report at the end of the month.
Government sources said MLA through the lines of the party are divided over the surveys. In the past, the MLAs opposed the surveys, since the power would slide into the hands of the councilors. Now with excessive delay, some MLA are the opinion that the presence of the Council is necessary for the governance of the soft city, the sources said.
The Minister of Transportation, Ramalinga Reddy, a main MLA of the city and directs a survey committee of the BBM Congress of Karnataka Pradesh, said that the Government is anxious to approve the draft Law of GBA 2024 in the next session of the Assembly. “Once the bill is approved, the governor will be sent by assent. We hope that the bill will sail. Under the GBA, the BBMP will be divided into multiple corporations and the elections will be held, ”he said.
When questioned about what the Government will do if the governor rejects the consent for the bill, the minister said that the elections will be held to 225 BBMP neighborhoods. “The state government is contemplating surveys between June and August,” he said.
