Three workers died after falling into a drain while cleaning a registration mouth in the Kolkata leather complex in the Bantala area in the eastern suburbs of the city on Sunday (February 2, 2025), police said.

One of the workers stumbled and fell into the 20 -foot deep drain while cleaning the clogged shore with effluents from the leather units in the area, while two others tried to save it, but they also fell into the drain, said a police officer said .

The personnel of the Disaster Management and the Fire Brigade recovered the three bodies after an hour search, he said.

The three deceased were identified as Farzan Sheikh, Hasi Sheikh and add Sardar.

It was not known immediately if the three used masks while working on the shore.

The Minister of Municipal Affairs, Firchad Hakim, visited the place and described the deaths as unfortunate and tragic.

He said the state government would launch an investigation to discover those responsible for the tragedy.

“We will ask if the agency involved in cleaning and the contractor followed all the necessary guidelines and will take measures against those responsible,” he said.

The minister said the State will provide compensation to the relatives of the deceased.

“The deaths of three workers also indicate the breach of the standard operational procedures to clean the wells of man in the city and their outskirts,” said Suvendu Adhikari, leader of the opposition in the state assembly.

An official of the Municipal Corporation of Kolkata said that the three workers were not part of the corporation team.

“They were part of the leather complex management team,” he said.
