Bhopal:
The Bhopal Police capacity to carry out their work is hindered by outded wireless communication systems, which forces them to resort to improvised solutions to keep the devices functional.
According to the police, its current wireless communication system has exceeded its useful life, but despite the guarantees of digital wireless sets in the last three years, the department has not received any.
Motorola’s current wireless sets, which frequently work 800 MHz, were destined to be used for 10-12 years. The system, however, has been used for 24 years, police said.
The manufacturer provided service maintenance until 2015, but since then the sets have been allowed to work without adequate technical support. Problems such as rapid battery drainage, unclear voice transmission and interrupted connectivity have become a concern for police.
“These wireless (existing) sets are several years old. Solid clarity is poor and there is a constant crepiting noise. I have heard that training for new sets has been planned,” said Agent PRMOD Soni.
Police said they often need to resort to temporary solutions to maintain their intact devices to fulfill their functions. They often use thick rubber bands or try quick solutions to deal with broken components. In areas where the transmission signal is weak, police often fight to communicate effectively and repeatedly saying “Hello, hello” hoping to pass.
Police said the challenge increases in situations that involve laws and order. These sets cannot transmit urgent messages or cannot handle the communication load, leaving officers in a solution.
“This version is very old. The voice is not clear, and there are multiple black points where the range is inadequate. We need updated versions,” said Subspector Narendra Chaudhary.
Although six tenders are issued for new wireless sets, the team has not yet reached the hands of the officers, police said.
“I have not yet seen the new sets. The Police Department must be making arrangements, but we do not know when they will communicate with us,” said subinspector Ram Prasad.
The senior police officers said efforts are being made to update the communication system.
“Wireless systems are the backbone of police operations, either for the VVIP service or the maintenance of the law and order. We are adopting the latest technology and we will launch the new system for next month,” said the police commissioner from Bhopal Hari Narayan Chari Mishra.
Police said that new devices will have characteristics such as the monitoring of the live location (unlike the case of the oldest assemblies, the officers may no longer provide false locations, since the new sets will work as mobile phones with location monitoring live), remote deactivation ((if a wireless set is lost, it can be remotely disabled in the control room, to prevent unauthorized persons from listening to police communications), greater clarity (the quality of the voice will be comparable to mobile phones) and encrypted communication (digital sets will make it characteristic encrypted coding, ensuring that unauthorized users cannot take advantage of police conversations).
“There were cases in the past in which the officers reported being in a place while they were actually in another place. The new system will improve supervision and modernize police operations. Such advances must be welcome,” said the general director retired from the Shailendra Shrivastava police.
Police said that the new set of devices is expected to be distributed at all levels of force, covering the general inspectors to the assistant sub -inspectors. The police linked to emergency response equipment such as Dial 100, traffic police and beating in charge will also be provided.
