Thirteen people, including four poachers have been arrested for causing the death of another poaching hunter in Devarshola, Gudalur, on January 24. The men tried to convince the authorities that the man had been killed in an elephant attack.
The deceased was identified as Jamshid, 36. He, along with four others, identified as Nowsath, Jaffer Ali, Haider Ali and Satheesh, all residents of the area, entered a wooded area near Devarshola to hunt a wild game. It is alleged that during hunting, Jamshid was accidentally shot and killed by one of the other hunters.
The four men allegedly took him to the hospital and told the authorities that he had been killed during an attack by a wild elephant. However, after an autopsy, it was learned that Jamshid had not suffered any wound consistent with an elephant attack and that a bullet had killed him.
The Nilgiris district police registered a case and arrested the four men on Tuesday. They also arrested nine others that helped men eliminate evidence. Police also recovered weapons made in the country, bullet cartridges, as well as equipment used in men’s poaching hunting expeditions during the course of their investigation.
